Ramingining

 
 

Location

Ramingining is a mainland community located to the west of the Glyde River about 30 kms south east of Milingimbi Island, 580 km east of Darwin, 435 km by road west of Nhulunbuy and 30 km Inland.  Maningrida is 85kms by road to the West.  The main Nhulunbuy-Katherine road is 100 kms to the south.  Both roads linking Ramingining are dry season, four wheel drive use only.

The Community is located on the edge of the heritage listed Arafura Wetlands in Central Arnhem Land.  There are 11 out-stations belonging to Ramingining; Yatalamarra, Wulkarimirra, Ngangalala, Mulgurram,Garanydjirr, Galdjapin, Gattji, Gelirri, Manbbirri, Bundatharri and Gurulul.

Population

The population of Ramingining and its surrounds is approximately 800 to 900 - population varies depending on season and rainfall.

Languages

The main language spoken is Djambarrpuyngu (a dialect of Yolngu Matha) with another two main languages spoken, Dhuwala and Dhay'yi.

Recreation

The name Bula'Bula refers to the message embodied in the song-cycle of the area's principal creative being, Garrtjambal the red Kangaroo.
